SUPO Su‑Xiaopao Dongpo Lactic‑Acid‑Bacteria Pickle Packaging
SUPO Su‑Xiaopao Dongpo lactic‑acid‑bacteria pickle packaging has won the silver award in the Food‑Packaging category of the Shop! Design Awards. The competition evaluates entries across four dimensions: cultural‑IP integration, multi‑scene functional innovation, low‑carbon sustainability and shelf recognizability. Award‑winning works represent cutting‑edge design standards for global fermented‑snack packaging. Co‑developed by Liji Group and Chengdu Yijian Design, it addresses pain‑points of conventional pickle packages: limited functions, weak cultural identity and wasteful over‑packaging. The “one‑jar dual‑use” design supports both home‑style side‑dish consumption and on‑the‑go snacking.
Design Concept & Structural Features
The container adopts cartoon “Su Xiaopao” Dongpo‑themed IP styling. Its lid draws inspiration from Su Dongpo’s official hat and mountain‑shaped pickled‑vegetable imagery for high shelf‑standout effect. The emptied vessel can be reused for storage with added cultural‑merchandise value. The innovative layered “one jar, two eating modes” holds traditionally fermented pickles at the bottom for home cooking and rice‑pairing, plus separate sachets of crispy pickle chips for instant consumption during commuting or camping. Food‑grade rigid sealing material suits live‑lactic‑acid‑bacteria fermentation storage, offering pressure‑resistance and leak‑proof performance for transport. Free from redundant multi‑layer outer boxes, fully recyclable materials follow lightweight eco‑friendly principles. Available in family‑size and portable‑size variants, the standardized mould works for radish, young ginger and other pickle SKUs. Consistent visuals for e‑commerce and retail displays reduce new‑product development costs.
Exploration of Design Value
Combining local Dongpo cultural IP, innovative dual‑function layered structure, traditional pickle‑fermentation craft and sustainable‑packaging philosophy, the design breaks the trade‑off between home‑use and portability for pickle packaging. This award marks integrated innovation of intangible food heritage, food‑processing techniques and youth‑oriented packaging, delivering references for IP‑driven packaging of local‑specialty fermented food in China. Going forward, Liji Group will keep optimizing layered‑packaging structures and recyclable container materials, expand its Dongpo‑IP pickle portfolio, balance authentic fermented flavour, cultural aesthetics and multi‑scene practicality, and bring Sichuan‑style pickles to younger consumer groups.
